Being literate. I feel as if this is very much a skill that we often times take for granted. Have you ever really stopped and thought about how different things would be- how strange the world would seem if you never learned to read? To say the least, it would most definitely be extremely tough just to get through the day. I also feel as if literacy is a crucial skill today, more-so than any other time in the history of civilization, quite simply because it is very much fundamental in everything we do (especially communication).
I rather like and share the opinion of our UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova, in that literacy is a skill, but it is also so much more than this! It is essentially "the ultimate investment in the future." If the importance of being able to read well in society today is any gauge of its projected future seriousness, it is an investment that we should very much be focused on. I write this not only for the next generation of United States citizens, but for the next generation of World Citizens! It is multi-cultural, multi-national communication and comprehension that makes the real differences on the global level, and it is my thinking that literacy is at the core of these concepts. World Literacy Day is not only a day to celebrate the advancements of literacy rates, but a day that serves as an important reminder. We are doing a good job- I think we really are! Nonetheless, our work is not complete. Let's strive to be able to look back at 2013 and 'pat ourselves on the back' for a job well done in promoting literacy importance. Let's get the World reading! --Kurt Taylor, National Director of Education
